Born and raised in southern Minnesota, Tyler always enjoyed visiting the local coin shop to purchase coins and car/aircraft models. His aunt was a world traveler who would also bring him various coins and currency from foreign countries which he still admires. As he grew older his hobbies gradually changed and eventually, he was forced to work. In 2005, Tyler graduated from high school and took off for college. He pursued a bachelor’s degree in land surveying and mapping science, graduating from St. Cloud State University in 2011. The recession had made job seeking tough and he decided to chase work rather than to stay local and wait for an opportunity. He found an opportunity in Iowa where he surveyed for an engineering company that specialized in the utility sector. After a couple of years in Iowa, he discovered that there was an opportunity in Madison Wisconsin as a surveyor with a local utility company. In August of 2013, Tyler accepted a position with Alliant Energy and relocated to Madison. As an employee of Alliant Energy and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 965, Tyler was very involved with various committees and held many leadership positions. Tyler particularly enjoyed volunteering in the community and in 2021 he was recognized by Alliant Energy as a recipient of the Very Inspiring Person award which was limited to just a handful of individuals each year. This award is one that he is most proud of while he worked in the utility industry. In 2022, Tyler decided to venture out on his own to see what self-employment was all about. Tyler now owns and operates Bergstrom Land Surveying by himself. As a licensed professional land surveyor Tyler assists residents of Columbia County with their land surveying needs. In this time frame Tyler started looking into other investment opportunities that would help him diversify his portfolio. With a goal of one day owning lots of TLC (tractors, land and cattle) he found that it was not affordable, so he dove into the metals market. The sound of owning tangible assets like gold and silver sounded great! Tyler has been present at many coin shows in Wisconsin over the last few years. If you have ever visited the coin shows in Madison, Beaver Dam, Portage, Brookfield, Appleton, Oshkosh, Green Bay, Eau Claire and Rothschild then you have probably already done business together!!! In 2025, Tyler took his business to the next level and opened Portage Coin. He has greatly increased his availability to the public for the purposes of buying and selling gold, silver, coins and jewelry in a retail friendly environment. Offering land surveying services in the morning hours and precious metals in the afternoons.
